Quiz Day and Hopscotch

February 22, 2013
Today we had a quiz. We partner corrected the quiz. So there were large stretches of time where I could catch up on my twitter feed.
Here's what I found:
“An updated notion of genius would have to center around one’s mastery of information and its dissemination.”
They all love Japandroids, Alt-J, First Aid Kit, Macklemore, Beach House, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, THEESatisfaction...
The whole series is on Hulu

The Whale at Coney Island
– M4M — 69
(Brooklyn/Florida)
A young friend of mine recently acquainted me with the intricacies of Missed Connections, and I have decided to try to find you one final time.
Many years ago, we were friends and teachers together in New York City. Perhaps we could have been lovers too, but we were not. We used to take trips to Coney Island, especially during the spring, when we would stroll hand in hand, until our palms got too sweaty, along the boardwalk, and take refuge in the cool darkness of the aquarium. We liked to visit the whale best. One spring, it arrived from its winter home (in Florida? I can’t remember) pregnant. Everyone at the aquarium was very excited — a baby beluga whale was going to be born in New York City! You insisted that we not miss the birth, so every day after class, and on both Saturday and Sunday, we would take the D train all the way from Harlem to Coney Island.
We got there one Saturday as the aquarium opened and there was a sign posted to the glass tank. The baby beluga had been born dead. The mother, the sign read, was recovering but would be fine. We read the sign in shock and watched the single beluga whale in her tank. She was circling slowly. Neither of us could speak. Suddenly, without warning, the beluga started to throw herself against the wall of the tank. Trainers came and ushered us out. We sat on a bench outside, and suddenly I felt tears running down my face. You saw, turned my face towards yours, and kissed me. We had never kissed before, and I let my lips linger on yours for a second before I stood up and walked towards the ocean.
It was too much — the whale, the death, the kiss — and I wasn’t ready.
Forgive me — I don’t think I ever understood what an emptiness you would create when you left and I realized that that kiss on Coney Island was the first and the last.
Are you out there, dear friend?
If so, please respond. I think of you, and have thought of you often, all of these years.

Better Than Kim Jong-il

Chris Hardwick wrote a personal empowerment book. A fun read. He suggests creating a D&D character page for your life. And you create quests of things you want to accomplish.
Yeah, this actually looks super fun.

Today's Photo:
Tried to run today.
It almost worked.
I did not know that Burke-Gilman has a 0 mile marker at Gasworks.
But it doesn't have any milage markers along the way.
According to my GPS, Husky Stadium is 2 miles down the road.
And it's only 11 more miles to Kenmore.
So that's something to shoot for.

I like liking things. While there are many good pieces to this movie, it's really long and doesn't make a ton of sense.

I wanted to post this article about urban exploration, but I can't find it online.
Sorry.

I walk slow. I tend to stroll rather than walk.
Over the past year, it's become worse.
To the point where my walk is noticibly slower than anyone else.
We're investigating medical reasons for that.
There's no reason to worry.
I'm just peeing in a cup.

Task Rabbit Made It To Seattle !!!
I read about this in Wired over a year ago. It's a way for people to post and complete simple tasks for a small fee.  I need to do a video interview and then I'm in. Also, the Task Rabbits earn points and gain levels as they complete tasks. So I get to level up with these simple game mechanics while helping people and maybe make some money too.

DO NOT SEE THE NEW DIE HARD!!  THEY GO TO CHERNOBYL IN T-SHIRTS, STOP (or create) A RUSSIAN REVOLUTIONARY'S PLUTONIUM SCHEME, AND McCLANE'S KID IS SUPER DUMB. PLEASE JUST WATCH ONE OF THE OTHER FOUR DIE HARD MOVIES, WHICH ARE ALL WAY BETTER THAN THIS NEW PIECE OF JUNK.

I'm one of the few people who still loves the NBA. And I'm one of a smaller subset that loves All-Star Weekend. To their credit, All-Star Weekend has made some changes over the past few years like adding a H-O-R-S-E competition, picking teams for the Rookie/Sophmore game (now called the Rising Stars game), and adding the West vs. East wrinkle to Saturday Night.
But the dunk contest needs work. We need LeBron, Durant, Blake Griffin, and Dwight Howard to do this EVERY YEAR.

Portrait of a Modern Inuit Family
“What's your line of work?” It's a common conversation opener, especially toward someone like me who just six months ago moved from the other side of the country. The person asking has usually already heard about my wife and her great new job that brought us to town, so naturally it’s time to find out what I’m doing here. ... “I used to do architectural design,” I say, “but now, since the move, I'm the homemaker of the household.”
What a sweet picture this conjures: the stay-at-home dad nurturing his children, looking after the house and helping support his wife in her budding career and shelving his own big ambitions for later. Now it gets a little awkward. There is no adorable kid, nor plans to have one. No starter home that needs knocking into shape. I'm not just doing this temporarily until I find something meaningful to do. I’m actually a full-time homemaker ... not stay-at-home dad but stay-at-home dude. A conversational pause. Where do you mentally file this guy? Usually I just change the subject.

I asked a member of our forum to explain Primer to me, because he seemed to get it and I did not.
This was the email I got in reply. -Teague
Written by Jeffery Harrell

This is a fucking novel. If you read the whole thing I will be legitimately astounded.

Okay, so the awesome thing about "Primer" is that there are at least two whole movies going on that we never get to see, and maybe three. The events depicted on screen comprise no more than a third, and maybe less, of the events that transpire during the course of the story.

(7,500 words later...)

So anyway. That's "Primer." At least I think so.

(I didn't do dick today. Obviously.)

“What about you?” Kevin asks me, and again I don’t know what to say. Sometimes, I think of telling Kevin the truth: that life is good, very good, because I can move around and walk through alleyways and eat a sprinkled donut. I can put on headphones and listen to Bon Iver and pretend the world is my movie, that what I’m seeing is only mine, that the way the light bends across a cemetery or the way a bird angles in flight are things given to me because I am not sick like Kevin. I can feel a moment of melancholy and trust it will go away. I can eat apple pie, even if it’s not a holiday, and I can wear green, or red, or rings carved from emerald or jade. I can ride a bicycle or spray paint it blue or kiss a boy for hours on a fraying couch while a TV plays. I can stay up all night if I want, eating Raisin Bran and watching cartoons, or I can drive to Niagara Falls or hike a mountain or tie my shoes. I want to say to Kevin that life was better when he could do these things beside me—see a midnight movie, just drive around—and that since he’s been away, I haven’t ordered Chinese once, because who will eat the water chestnuts? They would just sit there on my plate.
Instead, I tell him work is work and that often I’m very tired. “Life is exhausting, frankly,” I say, because I want him to remember what it’s like outside of this place—how it can be good, but it’s not everything.

Oh, And There Was A Super Bowl Too

February 3, 2013

Let's start off by being honest: The United States has no business not qualifying for World Cup 2014. The final six-team round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying -- aka, the Hexagonal -- begins for the U.S. in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Wednesday (4 p.m. ET, BeIN Sport). The math is simple: The top three finishers will advance to Brazil 2014, while the fourth-place team will go to a highly winnable playoff against the top qualifier from Oceania (almost certainly New Zealand).
Bottom line: Four of these six CONCACAF teams -- the U.S., Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Panama -- will likely make it to the World Cup, and if the U.S. can't finish in the top four, well, then something's very, very wrong.

There's a whole other mountain out there. One with fresh air, and space to carve and turn.  A place where a man can pick a line and no one can interfere with the path he's chosen.
The ride up is scary, because it's an express chair and it's very fast.
But it's so worth it.

He's almost swinging down on the ball.

Zombies, RUN! - A Voice In The Dark

At the end of the last mission, I had been tricked into meeting defectors outside New Canton.  I was betrayed and held at gunpoint, which was a total downer way to end.
This mission started with my handler just talking to no one in particular. Holding some faint hope that I might still be out there and be unzombified. He pontificated about the world before the Zoms and how he had to "liberate" his parents. Finally, as I was coming up a big hill in real life, Abel Township saw me just ahead of a swarm of Zoms. They opened the gates for me (which they NEVER do at night), and celebrated the survival of the fourth Runner Five.
I love this game.

In honor of the book's 200th anniversary (birthday?), NPR made a comic strip.
