Day 284 - An Argument Against Editing

July 18, 2011

This post of "A Year in 3,059 Photos" struck me for three reasons:
1) That's a ton of photos.
2) There seem to be 10 photos for every event.
3) Several of the photos are completely mundane.

There are pictures of ketchup bottles, trees, and lots of pets. But after watching the slide show, I feel like I know this person pretty well.  So maybe every picture doesn't have to be great, because when it's combined with 3,058 other pictures, you get the whole story.
So these are photos that didn't fit other places:

This is fun.  Maybe I'll take photo dumps more often.
(There HAS to be a better way to say that.)

Day 283 - Japan out U.S.'s us (The U.S.)

July 17

It was a fun ride I didn't know about three weeks ago.  Couldn't be a better story than Japan's team.  They didn't have enough electricity to practice a few months ago, now they're winning it all.  Glad you all could join me on the USWNT bandwagon.  Now get off, you're using all the armrests.  Come back next summer for the Olympics.
Or will you have forgotten about "your new favorite team" by them?

Speaking of bandwagons, I received an invitation to Spotify.  I'm not really sure why it's different than other free music services out there, but people seem to think it is.  Hey, it's big in Europe.
What more do you need to know?

It kind of sounds like a joke, like this should be playing in New Orleans Square at Disneyland, but he's for real (and he's kind of catchy).

Oh, so these guys actually do a ton of work and we probably shouldn't give them crap considering the enormity of what we ask them to do?  Right.

His podcast (Star Talk Radio) with Jon Stewart is solid as well.  “Carbon is the slut of the periodic table.  It bonds with everything from every direction.  From the top, from the sides, from below.  Carbon doesn’t care.”

Day 282 - Brian Mullen Did Not Make The Trip

July 16. 2011
The Rapids did not bring Brian Mullen, who injured Steve Zakuani a few months ago.
Probably safer for him, but a strange precedent to set.

Day 280 - HP7P2: It All Ends

July 14, 2011
The line outside the theater for the midnight showings.  This is four hours before the movie started.  There were 8 midnight showings that were all sold out.  Luckily, we avoided the craziness by hitting a double feature.  We saw HP7P1 at 9:00, which was way better than waiting in this mess.
Yes, those are special Harry Potter 3D Glasses.

July 12, 2011
Music themed bar with a nice happy hour menu.
They also have rock and roll trivia on Tuesdays at 8pm.  Tempting.
Place wasn't really hopping at 4:00pm on a Tuesday.  As would be expected.

Packed house at Easy Street.  The whole cafe was jammed with fans.
We even overflowed onto the street.

Celtic Swell Trivia
A foursquare check in led to the creation of trivia super team "Flatulence".
My, that's a magnificent looking trophy.
Trivia Win!!
Really odd mix of questions.  Toughest category was easily "The L Word" all about the tv series I've never watched.  The "Disney Duets" category contained erroneous information, because the song "If I Never Knew You" is not in the original Pocahontas movie and in the broadway play.  And one of the best questions I've seen: "If you take all the currency that features assassinated presidents, and added up the values on each piece (includes paper or coin up to $1000), how much money would you have?

July 9, 2011

If you laugh at the trailer, you'll laugh at the movie.  And they do make the point that being sexually harassed by Jennifer Aniston is not quite the same as dealing with the other two bosses.

In other news, I fixed my shoe with super glue.
To be honest, it was just a little bit terrifying.

Day 274 - Do I Have Homework Now?

July 8, 2011
So I might have to read this textbook this summer. I'm actually confident I don't have to read it, but I think it might be a good idea if I re familiarize myself with science.  It's been a while.  We were so close for so long.  And then we just kind of drifted apart.  And now we might be back together.  There's just so much to process.
Science is making a lot of promises right now.

My Summer at an Indian Call Center

Call-center employees gain their financial independence at the risk of an identity crisis. A BPO salary is contingent on the worker's ability to de-Indianize: to adopt a Western name and accent and, to some extent, attitude. Aping Western culture has long been fashionable; in the call-center classroom, it's company policy. Agents know that their jobs only exist because of the low value the world market ascribes to Indian labor. The more they embrace the logic of global capitalism, the more they must confront the notion that they are worth less.

At the end of each training day, the Qualis would drop me back at the Toyota showroom. From there I would walk down a narrow, unpaved lane and turn onto an even narrower alley, just wide enough (I learned the hard way) for a human to squeeze past a cow.
Like most BPO agents from out of town, I rented a room in a workers' hostel. For the equivalent of $80 per month, I got a nine-by-six cell—a plywood double bed, a ceiling fan, and two windows covered in newspaper—plus two hot meals a day

The medium chill involves what economists call satisficing: abandoning the quest for the ideal in favor of the good-enough. It means stepping off the aspirational treadmill, foregoing some material opportunities and accepting some material constraints in exchange for more time to spend on relationships and experiences.

It turns out, though, that satisficing doesn't come easy to us human beings. We have an extremely hard time saying, "okay, this is good enough." Why?

I would watch this movie right now.

Trailer for his big comeback.  Because, as a nation, we only care about trainwrecks.

This is so next level.
