Quad Arts

September 16, 2012

We hear it all the time: in the last decade, the NFL has changed. This thesis usually comes at the head of a conversation about a drift in the run/pass ratio, but the changes in a typical fan's experience of the game go well beyond the way the players play and the coaches coach. Like every other segment of the mainstream culture, the NFL has had to find ways to bind itself to the internet in order to grow, and its success at this new art form—call it technoknitting—has been unparalleled. Fantasy football, sure, but there's much more: live-tweeting and commentary from sports writers you admire, game content delivered directly to smart phones, and the NFL's most pernicious invention since the tuck rule: NFL RedZone.
RedZone is essentially channel surfing on autopilot for a football watcher, switching between every NFL game whenever a team comes within 20 yards of the end zone (I.e., the "red zone"). Tossed together with live commentary and other game-breaking highlights, it promises "Every Touchdown from Every Game," which, if you were raised on Madden or have ADHD, is pretty much everything you want to see, without having to move your hand, head or retina. Introducing RedZone to a regular football addict is like giving a gravity bong to a long-time joint smoker. In other words, it is possible now, and easier than ever, to actually OD on football.
