Day 237 - Hooked

May 30, 2011
Wow.  Russia makes awesome action movies.
The premise of "Hooked"?
Russian video gamers win a tournament and they win advance copies of a new game.  But when they pop the game in their computers, all of their in game skills are transferred to real life.  So, the racing champion becomes the best driver, and the fighting champion is a hand-to-hand specialist.  Mostly, the team becomes super soldiers, which are then forced to complete assassinations to corner the palladium market and achieve energy dominance for a Russian corporation based on a blimp.
Oh, and stuff blows up.  Lots of stuff blows up.
There's a sequence where the kids, armed only with paintballs, take down a whole platoon of soldiers.
It's pretty cool.

And there's a Siff iPhone App so you can organize your schedule.

Day 236 - The Interrupters

May 29, 2011
The Interrupters at Harvard Exit
The Interrupters is about Cease Fire, a violence prevention group in Chicago.  The movie is strangely uplifting, or at least it's not depressing.
It completely held my attention for 150 minutes.
This movie reinforced two important lessons:
You are responsible for your life.
and
You need to take care of yourself so you can take care of others.

Steve James also directed Hoop Dreams
(If you haven't seen it in a while, watch that movie again.  It's firmly grounded in the mid 90's but it's still a great movie)
Alex Kotlowitz wrote the book, There Are No Children Here about two boys growing up in inner city Chicago
(I have a copy if you want to borrow it.  It still has my notes from college.)

Steve James and Cobe Williams (one of the Interrupters) both spoke after the screening.

Nice work, Siff!

Day 235 - Champions League Final

May 28, 2011
Champions League Final at St. Andrews Pub
We showed up an hour before kickoff and the place was already packed.
As soon as we showed up some Manchester United supporters, (who probably started drinking last night) got in the face of a Barcelona supporter.
The words "punch you in your f@#$ing face if you keep talking that $#@! in my ear" were used.
Not wanting to poke the bear, I didn't want to take a picture and possibly incur his wrath.
The bar was split 50-50 between Man U and Barca.
The environment was great.  The game was great.
The right crowd makes a big moment even bigger.

Day 234 - Viva Las Vargas!

May 27, 2011
Surprisingly entertaining.
Michael Pineda gave up a home run in the first, and both pitchers were done by the 5th inning.
The Mariners scored all their runs on infield outs.
And Alex Rodriguez was jeered incessantly.

The "Viva Las Vargas" theme didn't really mean much.
And Vargas didn't play at all because it wasn't his turn to pitch.
But if it means we win, celebrate Vegas every night.

Day 233 - Liberty DeVitto

May 26, 2011
(Liberty DeVitto was Billy Joel's drummer.)

This video also puts me in a happy place:
(In case you didn't figure it out, I played a ton of Rock Band today.
That's pretty much it.)

Day 232 - Sounders v. Dallas

May 25, 2011
Being a fan can be tough sometimes.
The Sounders played terribly and the weather was horrible.
19 shots, but only 6 on goal?
What are we doing?
The video makes it look way more competitive than it felt at the time.
Our Sounders had no juice tonight.

Two other items:
1) Saying "literally" is slowly creeping into my everyday vocabulary.
I thank Chris Traeger.

2) Oprah's final show was sweet and uplifting.
It is saved on my DVR and has achieved "Save Until I Delete" status.

Day 231 - Overtime Means More Time

May 24, 2011
The football above is signed by Steve Sarkisian.
There are literally dozens of people who would be super appreciative of this ball.
It was given in a fundraiser to a student who could not identify this object as a football.
(sigh)
(I'm probably exaggerating.  I bet he knows it's a football.  But I'm pretty sure he doesn't appreciate the gift the way other people would.  That thought is still depressing.)

I visited my parents today.
We did stuff:

Yes, I know it's a show typically aimed at women.
I don't care.  Oprah is awesome.
The stars did not stop coming.
(Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Josh Groban, Patti LaBelle, Madonna, Dakota Fanning, Beyonce, John Legend, Diane Sawyer, Maria Shriver, Halle Berry, Katie Holmes, Queen Latifah, Rascal Flatts, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael Jordan, Jaime Foxx, Stevie Wonder, Jerry Seinfeld, Maya Angelou, Aretha Franklin, and Alicia Keyes.)
So yeah, It was worth watching.
I did not realize Oprah has a scholarship at Morehouse College.  All the graduates talked about how they would not have earned an education if not for her scholarship.  They talked about how they were doctors and lawyers and hedge fund managers because of the opportunity Oprah gave them.
Then they all came out on stage to surprise Oprah, which made her cry.

2)  Canucks
Shifting gears to playoff hockey:
Overtime was crazy.  The officials didn't call anything.
Scott Van Pelt (@notthefakeSVP)
5/24/11 9:44 PM
It would take murder to get a 2 minute minor right now. Barry Melrose on SJ/VAN 2 OT
It ended like this:
Let me try to explain what happened.
Overtime in hockey is sudden death.
The Canucks are trying to pass the puck around the boards behind the goal.
But the puck rises up into the glass.
The glass is held together by several partitions.
The puck hits one of these partitions and shoots out to center ice.
Everyone is looking for the puck to continue along the boards.
(That's why everyone is looking the wrong way).
Kevin Bieksa is the only one who sees the puck and he buries it in the back of the net.
Canucks are going to the Stanley Cup Finals!!
Another great moment:
Henrik Sedin accepts the Campbell Trophy for winning the Western Conference.
But he doesn't touch the trophy, because it's not the one he wants.
Awesome.

3)  Honey Badger Don't Care
Hockey intermissions are 20 minutes.
You have to find ways to entertain yourself.
My brother and I chose this (he hadn't seen it).
You've probably seen this before, but it's still funny:

(Thanks Danny and Nick)
(Double Overtime.  You need lots of entertainment.)
These guys make outrageous meals.
The calorie and fat counter in the corner is probably unnecessary.  In no universe is this healthy.
And, if you're squeamish, you should stop watching when they present the meal because they are going to eat it... all of it.
This is probably the least offensive video in the series.
Thanksgiving is insanity.

5) Hoodie Allen
I have listened to this song literally one hundred times in the last few days.  It turns out this guy used to work at Google, and now he's rapping.  He also gives out all his music for free through his facebook page.

Day 230 - Athleticness

May 23, 2011
Running is supposed to be good for you.
But they only way I'll go run is if it's fun.
The key is to find ways to make things that are good for you, fun for you.

1) Read Born To Run
It's about the Tarahumara, a tribe of ultra-marathoners in Mexico's Copper Canyon.  The Tarahumara run for hundreds of miles in sandals and love every minute of it.  The author wanted to figure out their secret and see if he could learn how to be a crazy ultra runner too.  That story is peppered with little tips about running (try to land on your forefoot or midfoot) and a history/biology lesson of how humans are made for running long distances.
There's a great story about persistence hunting, where tribesman would just start jogging after an antelope.  The antelope would try to sprint to get away, but the tribesman would just keep jogging after it, eventually catching up to the antelope and forcing it to sprint again.  The antelope eventually runs itself to death and the human has dinner.
This still happens in Africa today.

2) Prince of Persia
I like going to Bridle Trails because there's nobody else there.  It also helps that the soft trails are better for my back. But the downside is giant mud puddles and regular sized horse droppings.
Agility and awareness are required.
Every time I run around a mud puddle I think of the wall run from Prince of Persia

3) Arcade Fire
This song is surprisingly great for running
The video makes me think of running too.
Also dope:

4) Don't focus on speed.
Speed is overrated.
Finishing is what counts.
But that might just be something slow people say.

Day 229 - Pirates. Softball. Chicken. Canucks.

May 22, 2011
Unrelated topics.
Lightning Round!
GO!
1) Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides
Meh.
(33% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it made $90 million dollars.)

2) Softball
It's a recreational league.
We're grown ups playing softball for fun.
You get a voucher for free pizza after the game.
There's no money on the line.
But every call the ump got wrong went against us.
Everyone could have done something different.
We can't blame it all on the ump.
This was a team loss.
Seriously.
So.  Good.
Scrumtrulescent.

4) Canucks
Vancouver beat the San Jose Sharks in Game 4
The Canucks scored three goals while enjoying a 5 on 3 advantage.
Sami Salo had two goals in 16 seconds!!
These guys are legit.
You can get updates from the Canucks on Twitter.
The twitter hashtag?  #nowayjose

Day 228 - Teammates Must Love Playing With Messi

May 21, 2011
We have one guy on our soccer team that does not stop sprinting.  Long after everyone else is winded, he's still charging all over the field.  He blessed me with 2 goals this week.
I had almost nothing to do with it.
He took on three defenders, managed to pass the ball directly onto my foot, and fooled the keeper so bad that I was three feet away from an empty net.
It felt like this:
Thank you, Daniel!
And right after our game went final, the Sounders won on a header in Stoppage Time.
Look at the height Jeff Parke gets on this:
I couldn't find a photo credit.  I found the picture in a tweet.
House Team 2-0-2  6pts
(Only 2 pts out of first place!)

Day 227 - The Perceived Value of Education

May 20, 2011
I gave my students a typical math assignment on Wednesday.  Students had 30 minutes in class, an extra hour and a half after school due to early dismissal and all day Thursday to finish their homework.
Only 25 out of 60 students completed their homework.
How can I help them if they won't help themselves?
I am depressed and discouraged.

(Yes, I watch Oprah.  She's amazing.)
Tererai stops at nothing to get an education, but I have students that can't get off Facebook long enough to complete their homework.
This is why Oprah is awesome.
I will be watching all three of her finales.

The rest of my afternoon involved creating Jon Moxon in Madden,
being drafted by the Raiders (who took him with the 100th pick?!?!  Slap in the face!!),
hoisting the team on my back, and bringing them a 13-0 record.
You're Welcome, Oakland.
(Yes, I was playing on Rookie difficulty.  I wanted to focus on my podcasts.)

While this is going on, I have to do something more... worthwhile.
I burned through a ton of Radiolab episodes.
It's a podcast.
It's free.
If you don't listen to Radiolab, start now.
More info on this experiment can be found here

Radiolab is hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, neither of whom is a scientist.  So the show is two very entertaining and jovial guys talking about science with scientists, but looking at it from very fresh and interesting angles.  I really liked this episode on "Falling", including stories about falling in a black hole, falling over Niagara Falls, and a heartbreaking story about falling in and out of love.

Day 226 - Tantrum and Ways to Stay Sane

May 19. 2011

A kid decided to build a pile of torn tissues instead of completing his math assignment.  I asked him to stay after class and clean up his mess.  I remained calm throughout his entire reaction.  First,he threatened to drop his backpack and himself out the window.  Then he called his mom and said they should sue me.  Then he kicked several desks over.  After this five minute tantrum, he spent 30 seconds cleaning up the mess and I let him leave.
(Ugh)

I have a Master's Degree.

(Depression Sound)

Here are five things to take my mind off work:

But what if I find myself free on a weekday?  I should also have a summer guide with more flexibility.

Awesome.

May 19 - June 12
SIFF is spread out over several theaters and several weeks.  They have a cool feature this year called the Siffter that can help you find movies you might like.  You can search by genre, country, venue, day and time.  Mix and match the settings to find movies you might like.  You can also get ideas from the Stranger Siff Blog.

And on days when I just want to stay home:

4) Sly Cooper

5) Super Mario Galaxy 2

Day 225 - Summer Songs

 May 18, 2011
TBTL recently launched the "TBTella ella Song of the Summer".  This is where they try to find the song that will be everywhere this summer.  You'll hear it blasting out of cars.  You'll hear it being pumped up at barbecues.  You'll hear when you're shopping at Target.  For me, It means that I get a ton of new music.
TBTL has had a debate about if the Song of the Summer should be something wildly popular or just the song we like the best from that time period.  The current songs in the running for the 2011 crown run the gambit from indie hits  only heard on KEXP to more commercially successful songs.

Adele - Rolling in the Deep (This will probably win, though it's been out for months)

Also, I dig this Bon Iver cover of the Outfield's "Your Love"
You can download 10 Bon Iver covers free
(Thanks, Stereogum!)
Here's the original: "Your Love" by the Outfield.  (You'll know it when you hear it)

One requirement for being the TBTella ella  Song of the Summer is that the song has to come out this summer.  The song is supposed to transport you to a certain time and place because the song is ubiquitous.  For example, here are some other "Songs of the Summer" (though these were not all chosen by TBTL because it didn't exist)

         - (Tie) - Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
(I had to look this song up.)
2007 - Rihanna - Umbrella  (TBTella ella ... get it?)
2008 - Estelle - American Boy (Real World)
         - Lil' Jackie - The Stoop (TBTL)
2010 - Katy Perry - California Gurls (Real World)
(There's a mashup with Kesha too)

I know many of these videos are links to VEVO versions.  I'm not sure what VEVO is, but it seems to have removed every other version of the songs and videos.  So it's a tradeoff.  I have to sit through a 15 second ad every other song, but I get to see every music video ever made for free.  I'll take it.
And I received actual "Teacher Candy".
It's a cake pop shaped like an apple.
Delicious.
(Loyal readers think that's funny because of the Tom Haverfoods thing from a while ago.)
(Oh, we are laughing.)
