Day 302 - Keepin' The Devil Down In The Hole

August 5, 2011
The Wire is one of the best shows ever.  It's complex, thought provoking and constantly surprising.  It's uplifting, heartbreaking, sobering and based on real life incidents in Baltimore.  I bought the set on the cheap and had encountered a few minor problems with disc scratches.  Then I get to disc 2 of season 4 and I get this:

See those little black flecks on the disc?  They look like pepper. (Tigers love pepper.  They hate cinnamon.)  The disc would not read AT ALL.  Wouldn't even go to the menu.  When I took the disc in to get it cleaned, the guy said the disc was "completely f-ed" (his actual words).  The black dots are holes that go through all the layers of the disc, rendering the thing completely worthless.

Crap.

To the Interwebs!!

I found a shop online that specialist in selling individual discs from TV seasons.  It's cheaper than re-buying the whole series and the only option now that netflix started barcoding their discs.

So... if anybody needs a coaster...

Linkage:

Martha Stewart’s return from prison.  And how hard it was to try and rebuild her empire.

Much like the Wire, this book explores how systems push people into tough situations, and the forces that don't allow them to get out.

  1. I just finished getting caught up on EVERY episode of Damages (now that I found a place to watch it online) and I'm on to The Wire. Gave back the set I borrowed from Jovy (hair stylist) because I felt guilty every time I walked by the TV and saw it sitting there. I'm going to have this series in my Netflix cue FOREVER!
